Toilet Seat Purchased Ahead of Sports Massage Reopening

Toilet Seat Purchased Ahead of Sports Massage Reopening

EV Sports | Injury Prevention for Runners

Why did I buy a new toilet seat ahead of reopening the sports massage?

The short answer is because the old one was a little bit broken. The longer answer is incorporated into the helth and Safety Risk Assessment undertaken to ensure I was ready to reopen on 12th April.

The reason I did the risk assessment was because of Covid-19 – doing the wrong thing, or not doing the right thing worries me generally, but when I could potentially be risking other people’s health, it really started to unsettle me. With my treatment room being in my home, it also added an extra layer of responsibility to get it right.

I literally walked the route from the front door to my treatment room and the bathroom to identify any areas that a client could potentially use or touch. At first it was quite overwhelming, but once I had got into the flow of identifying any risks, it was quite satisfying to mitigate them with things I have now got in place.

These are just some of the things I have in place:

  • QR code for me and others to scan each day
  • Clinell wipes for using on equipment in between appointments
  • Face masks – mainly for me but available to others if they forget to bring one
  • Hand sanitiser – there is one by the front door and one just inside the treatment room
  • Small hand towels for the bathroom that can be washed at 60 degrees with my massage towels
  • Lidded box for belongings during a treatment that will be cleaned after each use
  • Massage couch that will be wiped down after each use

So, what about the toilet seat?!

As part of the bigger picture, my risk assessment doesn’t just look at the risks associated with Covid-19, it also includes:

  • Slips, trips and falls
  • Fire risks
  • Over exertion and feinting
  • Injury due to jewellery
  • Condition of equipment

The toilet seat could have come under the first or last or last one, but the latter is really more to do with EV Sports’ equipment rather than our house. In any case, the toilet seat had been broken since we moved in 18 months ago – it wasn’t a big issue, just a bit wobbly, but it seemed irresponsible to rely on me advising people of this before they used it. For the sake of £28, I wasn’t prepared to take the risk.

So, that is how I came to purchase a toilet seat ahead of reopening my sports massage on 12th April!

Not overly exciting, but this seemed to be a more light hearted and amusing heading than ‘Risk Assessment Completed’!
