How To Make Porridge Interesting!

Porridge is one of the easiest, healthiest and most filling breakfasts you can have but, boy it can be boring!  However, porridge is one of my preferred breakfasts (for all the aforementioned reasons), so I have experimented with a few different flavours and it really does make porridge more interesting!

Basic Ingredients:
25g porridge oats
50ml whole milk
50ml cold water

Additional Ingredients (to cook with the porridge):

1/4 tsp chopped fresh ginger
1 tsp manuka honey
1 tsp maple syrup
1/2 tsp cinnamon
Grated rind of 1 orange

Additional Ingredients (to add to the porridge after cooking):
1 banana chopped
1 tbsp pumpkin/sunflower/mixed seeds
Handful of blueberries

You can choose any combination you like, but these are my favourites:

  • Honey, Ginger & Mixed Seeds (I also add a banana after a run)
  • Mixed seeds (if I’m in a rush!)
  • Orange & Cinnamon (very Christmassy!)
  • Banana & Mixed Seeds
  • Blueberries & Mixed Seeds
  • Maple Syrup (this tastes delicious but has relatively much less nutritional value so I don’t have it that often)

What you need to do:

  1. Put the oats, milk and water in a saucepan with any of the additional ‘to be cooked’ ingredients
  2. Gently heat while stirring until it thickens but not boiling
  3. Add to a bowl with any of the ‘added after cooking’ ingredients
  4. Enjoy!

  • Honey & Ginger is particularly good for colds so why not have a lemon & ginger drink as well
  • I prefer to use whole milk but you can use any other milk – try coconut or almond milk for a dairy free version
  • Gluten free, but ensure you choose the oats carefully
